The Foundation of Style: Your Guide to Choosing the Right Flooring
The Foundation of Style: Your Guide to Choosing the Right Flooring
Choosing new flooring is a "ground-up" transformation. It is the largest surface area in your home, meaning it dictates the color palette, the acoustics, and even how much time you’ll spend cleaning on the weekends.
Whether you’re chasing the warmth of natural wood or the waterproof resilience of modern composites, here is what you need to know to stay grounded.
The Big Three: Durability, Moisture, and Comfort
Before picking a color, evaluate your room based on these factors:
Moisture Levels: Bathrooms and basements require non-porous options like Tile or Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP). Hardwood is a "no-go" here as it can warp.
Traffic Patterns: Entryways and kitchens need high PEI ratings (for tile) or thick wear layers (for vinyl) to withstand muddy boots and dropped pans.
The "Foot Feel": Do you want something soft and warm (Carpet), or are you okay with a harder surface that requires area rugs for coziness?
Flooring Do’s and Don'ts
The Do’s ✅
DO Acclimate Your Materials: If you’re installing wood or laminate, let the boxes sit in the room for 48–72 hours. This allows the material to adjust to the home's humidity so it doesn't buckle later.
DO Consider the Subfloor: Your new floor is only as good as what’s underneath it. Ensure your subfloor is level, dry, and structuraly sound before installation.
DO Buy 10% Extra: Always order "overage" for cuts, waste, and future repairs. It’s nearly impossible to find a matching dye lot three years down the road.
DO Use Felt Pads: Protect your investment by putting felt protectors under every piece of furniture.
The Don'ts ❌
DON’T Wet-Mop Wood: Excess water is the enemy of hardwood and laminate. Use a damp microfiber cloth and cleaners specifically formulated for the finish.
DON’T Ignore the Janka Rating: If you have big dogs, check the Janka Hardness Scale. Soft woods like Pine or Cherry will show claw marks instantly; go for Hickory or White Oak instead.
DON’T Skip the Underlayment: This layer provides sound dampening and moisture protection. Skipping it can make your floors feel "hollow" or "clicky."
DON’T Install Transitions Last: Plan how the floor will meet carpet or tile in other rooms to avoid awkward, tripping-hazard gaps.
